Stories of the Prophets for Kids: The Story of Prophet Yunus
Today, we’ll learn about a beloved prophet who teaches us that hope exists even in the darkest times, and that God hears the prayers of His servants at all times and in all places. This is the story of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him). In this tale, we will discover important lessons about responsibility and patience, as well as the power of acknowledging our mistakes and returning to God, which opens the doors of mercy and salvation.
Let’s journey to the city of Nineveh to see what happened to Prophet Yunus, how his Lord called him from the depths of the sea and the belly of the whale, and how this story lights our hearts with certainty.
The Story of Prophet Yunus (Peace Be Upon Him)
Allah sent Prophet Yunus to the people of Nineveh in Iraq, where they worshipped idols. He called them to worship Allah alone and to abandon their false idols, but they were stubborn and refused to believe him.
Leaving the Village in Anger
After making tremendous efforts with his people and seeing only their defiance, Yunus felt a sense of despair. He decided to leave the village without waiting for Allah’s permission to do so. He warned his people that punishment would come to them in three days, then set off toward the sea shore to board a ship away from them.
At Sea and the Casting of Lots
Prophet Yunus boarded a ship, and as it sailed into the middle of the sea, the waves began to rise, and the ship rocked violently as if it would sink. Fearing for their lives, the crew agreed they needed to lighten the load by throwing one of the passengers overboard.
Since they were good people, they decided to cast lots. To their surprise, the name of Yunus came up. Knowing his virtue, they hesitated to throw him overboard and drew lots again and again. Each time, it was Yunus’s name that was chosen. Realizing it was Allah’s will, Yunus decided to jump into the sea.
In the Belly of the Whale
By Allah’s command, a gigantic fish swallowed Yunus. Allah instructed the fish not to harm him, so he remained safe inside as if in a prison. In the darkness of the night, the depths of the ocean, and the belly of the fish, Yunus realized he had made a mistake by leaving his people without Allah’s permission.
He began to glorify Allah and seek forgiveness by praying a famous prayer: “There is no god but You; glory be to You! I have indeed been one of the wrongdoers.”
Rescue and Return to His People
Allah accepted the sincere prayers of Yunus and ordered the fish to release him onto the shore. Weak and ill, Yunus was comforted by a plant that grew nearby, providing him shade and protection as he recovered. Once he regained his strength, he returned to Nineveh. To his surprise, he found that his people had all embraced faith after witnessing the signs of the punishment that they had been warned about.
Nineveh became the only town where every single one of its people believed, and Allah lifted the punishment from them.
