The life of Prophet David (peace be upon him)

Today, we delve into a new tale from the stories of the prophets, focusing on the life of Prophet David (Dawood). This beloved prophet is unique, as God granted him both prophethood and kingship. Many events unfolded in his life, and we hope you enjoy this story.

A Brief Overview of David’s Life

Prophet David’s lineage traces back to Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim). He was the youngest of twelve brothers and was exceptionally skilled with a sling. It is said that David originally lived for 60 years, but God extended his life by an additional 40 years from Adam, allowing him to live for a total of 100 years.

One significant event in David’s life was his confrontation with Goliath (Jaloot). God revealed to David that a young man would kill Goliath and become king. A sign that indicated this young man was that water would overflow from a horn placed on his head—all of which pointed to David.

At that time, David was a shepherd. God commanded King Saul (Talut) to wage war against a city and kill its inhabitants, but Saul refused to obey. As a result, God punished him by stripping him of his kingship and granting it to David. During a battle between Saul’s army and Goliath's forces, David emerged to confront Goliath, defeating him and thus becoming the king of the Children of Israel. The people loved David greatly for his just leadership and remarkable ability to resolve disputes.

One day, David faced a case regarding a dispute over sheep that had entered a vineyard, damaging the grapes. He decided that the vineyard owner should receive the sheep. However, God revealed to David that he had erred in judgment. His son, Solomon (Sulaiman), provided a better solution: the vineyard owner should keep the sheep temporarily to benefit from their milk and wool until he could replant his vineyard, after which he would return them to their owner. David accepted this wise counsel.

The Encounter with the Angel of Death

In another story, the Angel of Death visited David. According to a narration by Abu Huraira, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “David was a very jealous man, and whenever he left his home, he would close the doors. One day, he closed the doors and went out. As his wife looked out, she saw a man in their house. She exclaimed, ‘Who let this man in? If David discovers this, there will be trouble!’ When David returned and saw the man, he asked, ‘Who are you?’ The man replied, ‘I am the one who fears no king and cannot be barred by any door.’ David realized that this man was, indeed, the Angel of Death, and he acknowledged his presence.”

Additionally, there was an incident when David saw a beautiful woman, unaware that she was married to one of his soldiers. David ordered that her husband be placed at the front lines of battle, leading to the soldier's death, which then allowed him to marry her. However, God admonished David for this action, reminding him of the importance of righteousness and justice.

It is important to recognize that historical accounts, particularly those involving the prophets, are often subject to scrutiny and interpretation. The mention that David's actions were criticized serves as a reminder of the moral integrity expected of leaders.
